We're informed that the pear tree in the center was planted as a memorial to the late NC State basketball coach Jimmy Valvano. No more information was provided. Historical photos indicate the tree was planted between May, 2009 and July, 2010. It is located on the north side of the greenway path between the children's playground and the tunnel under Cary Parkway.
